LEPTOSPIROSIS VACCINATION IS BACK!

We are happy to announce that we finally have a new leptospirosis vaccination available. Please read all details below.

We will be trying to roll out as many vaccinations as possible between now and the start of the wet season.

We will be taking bookings ONLINE for leptospirosis boosters to be given by our experienced veterinary nurses.

Two boosters will be required 4 weeks apart as this is a NEW vaccine. The cost will be $60 per booster (a 50% discount off the full price).

We will also be having a mass vaccination drive for the following two Saturdays (9th and 16th of November at our WHITFIELD clinic between 8.30 and 11.30 am (and then two Saturdays 4 weeks later – 7th (at WHITFIELD) and 14th (at STRATFORD) December for boosters). No appointment/booking will be required on these Saturdays. New patients that we have not seen previously will be required to have a consultation with one of our veterinarians prior to their Lepto injection.

We kindly request that, if possible you PLEASE BOOK YOUR APPOINTMENT ONLINE. Due to the large number of boosters required (approximately 3000 doses) we are concerned a flood of phone calls will make it difficult to take calls for other reasons such as booking in sick pets or for emergency/urgent calls.

FAQs

What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease which can infect many different species of animals, including dogs.

Leptospirosis is spread by rats through their urine. This means your dog never has to see a rat. It just has to come in contact with some infected rat urine.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease which means it can spread from animals to humans.

Leptospirosis causes damage to the liver and the kidneys and can quickly lead to kidney failure. This kidney failure is often fatal.

What strains of Leptospirosis will the new vaccine protect my dog against?

The new vaccine protects against 2 serogroups: Australis & Icterohaemorrhagiae. The Australis strain is most common in Far North Queensland.

At what age can my dog get the new vaccine?

The vaccine is available to dogs from 9 weeks of age (usually given at the 2nd and third puppy boosters).

Does my dog require a booster vaccination?

Yes – all dogs (puppies & adult dogs) require a booster after the initial injection. This will be given 3-6 weeks after the initial vaccine. The vaccination will then be given annually for life.

My dog received a different Leptospirosis vaccine last year. Does my dog still require a booster?

Yes – this is a brand new vaccine & there is no cross protection from previous vaccines. All dogs receiving the new vaccine will receive 2 injections, 3-6 weeks apart & then annually for life.

When will my dog be covered for Leptospirosis after he/she has had the vaccine?

Your dog will be considered protected 3 weeks after the 2nd injection is given.

Does my dog need to see a vet or a nurse?

Our experienced nurses will be administering the leptospirosis vaccinations. If you have other health concerns please book a separate appointment to see one of our veterinarians.

I prepaid for Leptospirosis last year, do I need to pay for the new vaccine?

Yes. All pre-payments from the old vaccination will be refunded or credited to your account. Unfortunately, there will be no free of charge vaccinations available for the new vaccine, due to the extremely large number of vaccinations we will have to perform (approx. 3000 doses). We are discounting the booster by 50% of the full price. If you have any questions regarding your account, please contact us.
